In 1789 America had two very important political parties that divided the United States into two. There was the Federalists party, and the Democratic-Republican, These two groups only lasted till about 1816. Through this website I will be showing the important factors of the Federalists. The Federalists were known for liking a strong government, cental authorities over states rights, higher tariffs and a national bank and a U.S. dollar. Three people that impacted the Federalist party were George Washington, John Adams, and Alexander Hamiliton, they are the ones who formed and shaped this political party.

The chart above shows the two parties and what they have become over time. What it explains is that the Federalist eventually with time became what we known today as the Republicans and the Democratic-Republican became Democratics. This explains what both parties went through to be where they are at today.

Important Federalists
George Washington
George Washington was one of the people who formed the Federalist. He was the First president of the United States, he was in office from April 30, 1789 through March 4, 1797. Although he considered himself as independent during his terms he still was a part of the Federalists.

Alexander Hamiliton
Alexander Hamilton was involved in the revolutionary war, he joined the Patriot army in 1775. He gained attention through his career and by around 1779 he was known as Lt. Colonel, who was also George Washington's personal assistant. Hamilton wanted an people who advocated a stronger central government and a proactive role for the government in economic affairs which was known as the Federalists.

John Adams
John Adams was a very important Federalist. He was the Washington's vice president, and then became the second president of United States. John Adams was in office from March 4, 1797, through March 4, 1801. He happened to be one of the only presidents that was a federalists.

ALIEN and sedition acts
The Alien and Sedition Acts were made in 1 were acts that were made by the Federalists to because the Federalists believed that the most people who voted for the Democratic-Republicans were immigrants.
Sedition acts prohibited the publication of insults or malicious attacks on the president or any members of congress.

Thomas jefferson
Although Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican, because of his win in the election of 1800, the Federalists party fell apart. The First time John Adams and Thomas Jefferson ran for president, John Adams won, but in 1800 Jefferson took over Adams. Both parties changed state election laws to favor their candidates.

Election of 1800
John Adams a federalists, ran against Thomas Jefferson who was a Democratic republican, this graph shows who won what states. This year was when Jefferson won. Because of Jeffersons win, it pretty much took away the Federalists party.
